Licensure
The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of marriage and family therapy. The information is reviewed on an annual basis. Please be advised that laws, regulations, and policies may change at any time, so always check with your state for the most up-to-date information.
North Carolina has two MFT licenses, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate (LMFTA), and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT).
Associate License Requirements
- Graduated from a regionally accredited program.
- Completion of a clinical practicum.
- Evidence of intent to accrue the required supervised clinical experience required for full licensure.
- Application must include an agreement with an AAMFT Approved Supervisor to complete the clinical experience.
- Passes the exam prescribed by the Board (AMFTRB Exam).
- This license is non-renewable, but may be extended for up to one year to complete the requirements to become a LMFT.
Marriage and Family Therapist License Requirements
- Completion of all the requirements for the Associate license.
- Completion of 1,500 hours of supervised clinical experience.
- Up to 500 hours accrued during the candidate's time in a master's-degree program may be counted.
- 200 hours must be approved ongoing supervision by an AAMFT Approved Supervisor.
- At minimum, one hour a month of ongoing supervision required until licensed as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
- If this requirement is met during the master's-degree program, at minimum 25 hours are required post-degree.
- 500 relational hours are required.

Licensure by Endorsement (Portability)
- Must provide verification of licenses held in other jurisdictions, with evidence of no disciplinary action or unresolved complaints.
- Must be licensed for five continuous years and currently licensed as an LMFT or LMFTA in another state.
- Must have passed the exam prescribed by the Board (AMFTRB Exam).

Continuing Education
In order to renew a license, a licensee must complete continuing education every year.
